A student at West Orange High School was arrested Thursday, accused of having a gun on campus, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called around noon to the school near Winter Garden, where school staff was notified of a student who may have a weapon, a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said in an email.

After the school was locked down, deputies “were able to identify one of the students involved who did have a weapon on their person,” the spokesperson said.

The student, who has not been publicly identified, was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm and resisting an officer without violence, OCSO said.

Parents of West Orange students received a voice message from the school’s principal, Melissa Gordon, notifying them of the lock down and arrest.

She said deputies found the weapon in the student’s backpack and “at no time was it displayed in a threatening manner.”

“We strongly encourage you to speak with your son or daughter about making good choices and to regularly check your student’s backpack for items that are not allowed at campus,” Gordon added.

It’s the second day in a row where a gun was found at a school in Central Florida. On Wednesday, officials arrested two students after a handgun was found at Mt. Dora High School.
